Relationships Australia Tasmania Annual Report 2017-2018

Every long-running project has a first edition. For Relationships Australia Tasmania, 2017-18 was the year they moved their annual report off the page and onto the web.

Who they are

Relationships Australia Tasmania is a not-for-profit providing counselling, family services, and community programs across the state. In 2017-18 they served 7,724 clients across more than 27,590 sessions, became the first not-for-profit in Tasmania to achieve White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation, and were progressing multiple accreditation processes simultaneously. It was a year with plenty worth reporting, and for the first time, a digital platform to report it on.

The challenge

Moving an annual report from a printed document to a digital publication isn’t just a format change. It’s a question of how information is structured, how readers navigate it, and how the design reflects an organisation’s character rather than just filling a template. The 2017-18 report needed to establish all of that from a standing start, and do it in a way that could be built on year after year.

The organisation was running 21 programs across 16 contracts. The report needed to hold that complexity without overwhelming the reader.

What was built

A WordPress theme built for editorial depth

This was the first annual report website built for Relationships Australia Tasmania, and the foundation on which every subsequent edition has been built. The custom WordPress theme was designed to present a multi-section publication, covering mission, work, people, financials, governance, and services, in a way that felt considered and navigable rather than like a long webpage.

Staff profiles, case studies, and program spotlights were all part of the content mix from the start. The theme needed to accommodate that variety consistently, giving each content type the right structure without requiring a bespoke layout for every page.

Design brought to life in the browser

Visual design and layout were handled by Charlie Bravo Design, who defined the look of the first edition. The development work involved building that into a working WordPress theme and populating it with the year’s content, establishing the patterns that would carry forward into future reports.

The result

The 2017-18 report set the standard for everything that followed. Seven editions later, the decision to go digital from the start looks even better than it did then. An organisation serving thousands of Tasmanians every year deserves a report that reflects the quality of that work, and this is where that started.
