When designing a website, the first thing you will need to do is purchase a domain name that preferably, reflects your business. This is not always easy because the domain name you want may already be taken by someone else so you may need to be a little creative here. It is possible to buy a domain name from the owner if you really have to have that domain name assuming the owner is willing to sell it otherwise, look for one that will tell your story. Most if not all web hosting companies will have a search field for finding a domain name that you can use.
Domain names cost around $35 in Australia and will last for up to two years. To purchase “.au” domain names in Australia, you will have to have an ABN otherwise you are restricted to a “.com, .net or .org”. You don’t own the domain name, you only purchase the right to use that domain name for a set period.
Once you have a Domain name, you will need a place where your website is located or stored. A place where your website is made available to the world wide web or internet. This place is called a Web Hosting Service site.
We use Digital Pacific for domain name registration and web hosting. You can register your own domain name or we can do it for you for a small fee.
