SCAM ALERT – Letters or emails that your Domain Name is due for renewal or in danger of being sold are doing the rounds.
Several clients have called this week telling me that their Domain Name is about to expire, is available or due for renewal all for the great price of about $250+ and should they pay now or lose it.
What should you do:-
- Look closely, is it your domain or not. Does it come from the company that you brought it from. If not throw it away.
- Who is managing your domain, you or your web designer. If in doubt, call them and check.
The emails or letters are usually from people who are trying to trick or persuade you to pay an exorbitant fee for a domain that you already own or don’t want or need. These emails look real and very professional. The fee should be the dead giveaway, $250+ for an available domain is way too high. One of my clients who received such an email to renew his Domain Name for a princely sum of about $250 called last night. I said “hold on I will check”. I looked up the Domain and said I could get it for $14.95/year as it was currently available.
The bottom line is, be careful and don’t just blindly pay for something without carefully reading and checking if it is valid and don’t send any money to any company that you have never heard of.
