When designing a website, the first thing you will need to do is purchase a domain name. The domain name is your internet address and that name should preferably reflect your business. Most if not all web hosting companies will have a search field for finding a domain name that you can use.
To register domain names in Australia will cost around $35 and will last for up to two years. To purchase “.au” domain names in Australia, you will have to have an ABN otherwise you are restricted to a “.com, .net or .org”. You don’t own the domain name, you only purchase the right to use that domain name for a set period.
Once you have a Domain name, you will need a place where your website is located or stored. A place where your website is made available to the world wide web or internet. This place is called a Web Hosting Service site.
